Decked Halls {Monroe, WA photographer}

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE to see other people’s Christmas decorations! SO… I thought I would share ours here at the home front…

I wanted to decorate using rustic, natural elements this year… creating a home with many homemade Christmas items made by myself and the kids. This caused me to not put out as much as usual this usual… to simplify. I liked it. However, I am already looking ahead to next year’s Christmas decorations and I am craving sparkle and some vintage looks, much like this little mantle inspiration. Guess I’ll have to wait till next year!

Yes, that is a FAKE tree. I know, I know. “I thought you said you wanted a rustic looking Christmas this year,” you are asking. I do. BUT, we have tried 2x in year’s past to bring in a real, live Christmas tree and have found out that we are both allergic to it. I have always been bummed about this, as I have always wanted to be the cool family that hikes into the wilderness and chops down their own fir tree with our own two hands. Straight up family Griswold. Not gonna happen, though. Instead, because I crave this ruggedness, I brought home real evergreens outside… you will see in just a sec.

Oh, and the cute Christmas ornament is courtesy of Lisa Leonard. Ordered last year after Christmas discounted.

Brown paper packages tied up with string. These are a few of my favorite things. I went all Martha Stewart this year when it came to the wrapping portion of the season. I am usually just a “throw cheap wrapping paper on the presents” kind of a gal. But, pinterest… oh, sweet pinterest has been oh so inspiring to me, even when it comes to wrapping.

I should have taken a picture with Lightening McQueen and Luigi chillin next to the three wiseman, as this is how we usually find the nativity set.

Our mantle. Homemade stockings, made last year. Tree branches courtesy of a neighbors cut down tree. And, terra cotta pots brought in from outside, displaying sweet little lovelies.

I LOVE our town’s little downtown shops. I was in THIS store a few weeks ago and they were selling these pillows for 40% off. I had in my mind to make a few for the couches, but just haven’t had time, so I couldn’t resist purchasing.

Advent calendar.

Homemade little decorations the kids made. We have been busy crafting at home this past month… you may remember HERE.

Kitchen table and hutch… I have cut some fabric for a table runner, but have yet to find the time to sew it up for the table. Maybe in the next couple of days. You can see our advent candles on the hutch behind the table, we do every Sunday. Have you checked out THIS advent candle display? Maybe for next year. Beautiful.

I made this little Christmas card display earlier this month. I found the inspiration HERE. I have never had a way to display our lovely Christmas cards every year. I’m not sure I like this though. The cards on the wreath all swing every time we close our pantry door. I may have to come up with a different way to display our Christmas cards next year. Do you get as excited as me when you go get your mail everyday this month, excitedly looking for new Christmas cards?

Nativity made from a kit I purchased from HERE. And, the print is by Katie Daisy.

Our porch decs… HOW cool is this!? I found this idea HERE. Simply wrap lights around your tomato wire cages. I added the burlap, because of course, you can’t go wrong with burlap. And, the tree trimmings were picked up at Lowes. I went there to buy some real garland, but found they had a whole box of tree trimmings, so I dug in and came home with these bad boys for FREE. AND, I also scored some short little logs I have stored in the garage to use for several ideas I have in my head down the road. Again, FREE. My neighbor gave me the red bows. So, you see I can be a bit rustic in my Christmas decorations, by displaying them OUTSIDE, so we can be allergy free this year, yes?

Don’t you love it when you can decorate your home without spending a pretty penny. I have found it’s all about using your imagination and finding things around the house to put together and look pretty!

What fun ways do you decorate your house for Christmas?

Family Rules Subway Art ~ FREE ~ printable {Monroe, WA photographer}

December 14, 2011 · 2:40 pm

Jeff and I have been talking for quite some time about outlining a family “vision” for our family. You know, in the way that large cooperations, church’s, or businesses do so. We wanted to brainstorm something and write it down about what kind of family we want to be, how we want to raise our children and define our marriage, and ultimately, how we want our family to live. We have talked about this for sometime.

Enter in the very popular Subway Art to spark an idea in my head. You have probably seen beautiful pieces or worded art from places like, Red Letter Words or from Etsy. I LOVE the way that some of them has a rustic etched on wood look and I most likely will be ordering a verse on something like that in the future from one of these popular shops! BUT, I wanted to make our own Family Rules Subway Art and so Jeff and I sat down and began brainstorming some of the things we wanted it to say.

Have a looksie right here…
**You’ll have to forgive the bad lighting. This picture was taken at night in our dimly lit dining room area.

Anyway, it has been quite popular around here since we hung it up. We have had conversations with our kids what each of the “rules” are and what they mean. And, some of our recent guests have taken a liking to it as well, sparking some discussion about their own family visions.

You can probably tell that I am passionate about families! I talk about my own family on this blog quite a bit, I LOVE to photograph them and my husband and I love to support other families, specifically, MOMS, in this season of life. SO, I thought of no better way than to say MERRY CHRISTMAS and THANK YOU for such a wonderful year than to offer up our own Family Rules Subway Art to anyone who might be interested!

This is a FREE download. There are two options to download. One is sized to a 16×20 {this is the size we have in our house… fyi: I found the frame at Ikea}. Click HERE to download the 16×20. The other is sized to an 8×10, a perfect fit for a smaller frame. Click HERE to download the 8×10.  Obviously, these are the Family “rules” that we brainstormed for our home, so if you would like something different, I highly recommend checking out one of the online resources I mentioned above for a custom look.  BUT, if you like what I have made, then have at it!  All I ask is that you please do not sell this or claim it as your own, for obvious copyright laws. Also, I would LOVE it if you joined me over at Kelly Harper Photography on FACEBOOK {just click HERE and then click “like” at the top of the page} or by following my blog! You can do so by adding me to your google reader or by subscribing in the side bar to your right.

Consider this my little Christmas present to you and your beautiful families! Thank you for reading and for encouraging me in my own motherhood journey and in my photography as well! It has been an amazing year and I am blessed to have met so many amazing people through this business.

Happy December 1st!!!

We have been seriously craftastic these past few days. My sewing machine seems to be permanatly attached to our kitchen table, fabric scraps being cut and sewn together to create festive pieces of sweet goodness for the happ happ happiest time of the year, glue gun mounted and plugged into the wall socket on our kitchen counter high above the reach of curious hands, glitter messes found on our family room carpet from said curious helper {future post to follow re. that}. We have been a crazy house of decking the halls. Love this time of the year.

And, amidst all of the decorating, comes Advent.

Ad vent
Noun: 1. The arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.

The waiting. The anticipation. The sweet expectancy of a tiny babe. There is something mysterious about it all, isn’t there? How the God of the universe came rollin into the world as a helpless newborn. Yep. God moved into the neighborhood.

I want my children to know the magic of the Christmas season. Not just the gift giving, or the pretty lights, or the sparkly colors… but the extravagant love made complete in the Christ child. So, we tell the Christmas story and we wait and prepare for his arrival.  I believe most all of the beauty that the Christmas season entails helps us to direct our eyes to this miracle.  If we look for it.

This morning, we began our advent calendar countdown.  I’ve been burning the midnight oil while sewing this bad boy up over the past couple of weeks.  I wanted to be intentional with it, so I wrote up 24 different little activities, crafts, or adventures that we will be doing each day together.  Here is some of what we’ve got planned…

Make paper snowflakes
Make a gingerbread house
Watch the Grinch that stole Christmas
Get a special toy and deliver to the food bank
Dinner out and Snowflake Lane
Make these
And these
And play this game
Sing Christmas carols by the tree
Visit Santa and walk around Garden D’lights
Make cinnamon dough ornaments
Have a Christmas party
Decorate Christmas cards for one another
Make Christmas cookies and deliver to our neighbors

This morning’s activity was to sip hot cocoa straight up with mini marshmallows.

This is her stick a camera in my face, I’ll give you a cheesy smile face. God love her.

What kinds of special things are you doing this month to celebrate the Christmas season? Do tell.

DIY kitchen set {Snohomish County, WA Martha Stewart wannabe}

October 12, 2011 · 3:10 pm

Yep, I will admit, I am a Martha Stewart wannabe. Or rather, maybe I am addicted to pinterest with all of the DIY ideas out there! Seriously, people. There is so much craftiness out there.

I know this is a photography blog. I have vacillated {I can hear Jeff now making fun of me for using the word vacillate. It is one of my favorite words to use and now I just say it a lot just to annoy him} between writing my own personal blog and keeping this one purely professional, but honestly, that isn’t me. I have said before that I can’t separate the two. I strive to live my life transparently and real, and I want this blog to be a reflection of that and my heart for Christ, my family, photography, and my passion for any sort of creativity. These are the things I love the most in my life. They are the things that move my soul. And, quite honestly, in regards to my own creativity, there are times when I tire from just taking pictures. I KNOW in order to stay fresh and continue loving what I do, I have to dabble in other creative things. Those are the times I have to get my sewing machine out. There is something about feeling like I accomplished something when I create. Maybe, that is because now, in this season of my life, sometimes not being able to fully finish anything is a daily reality. Laundry half put away. Dishes still need to be done. House almost picked up. When I am working on a project, I feel restful. Accomplished.

Plus, gift giving is my FAVORITE love language. I am so moved when other people surprise me with a little gift. And, I LOVE giving gifts to others. Earlier this year, I made a quiet goal to try and make homemade gifts for everyone this year. Not to buy from a store. But, rather to use my hands to create something for them. I haven’t been perfect at it… in fact, I am often late at the gift giving part. I just gifted my sister in law and my mom with some homemade flower pins last week and their birthdays were in AUGUST! Sorry guys!

That is not to say that I have tons of time to do these types of things. Working on Grace’s kitchen set kept Jeff and I both up till midnight many nights last week. But, it was worth it and deep down I loved it. I knew we were pouring out our love into this gift for her with our own hands.

SO… I wanted to show you the project Jeff and I made for Grace for her 2nd birthday!

Inspired from other DIY kitchen sets like this and this.

The Before and After…  We started with an old nightstand I scored from Goodwill for $4.99.  AND, on the day I was there, they were having a 40% off sale!

I sanded it down and Jeff chopped off the side things.  I already had paint in the garage, so he painted it and added a polyurethane coat to the top.  We bought an mdf board from Lowes for the back and screwed it to the back.  Jeff then took out the drawer and bought a board to be used for the oven door.

The sides…  On one side, we painted several coats of chalkboard paint and Jeff bordered it with some trim.  For the other side, I found a basket at the dollar store to be used as the fruits and vegetable basket.

I had wanted to use a real faucet, but we couldn’t find one cheap enough, so I got a wooden letter J from Joanne’s and we spray painted it silver.  Jeff used L brackets to hold it in.  The red faucets I found at a local antique store and to lift them up a bit and be able to turn them, we used wooden spools and washers spray painted silver.  The bowl for the sink, I already had laying around the house, so all Jeff had to do was cut a hole in the top to place it in.

The oven burners are wood circles found at Joanne’s, spray painted silver.  The black grates on top are popsicle sticks painted black.  And, the knobs for the burners were also found at Joanne’s.  All purchased with my 40% off coupons.

We just mounted a pre-made shelf to the back of the board.  And, I stuck some old vintage salt and pepper shakers I had lying around on top.  The rolling pin was part of the baking set from Ikea that my parents got her.

I made the flowers using this tutorial.  Really just fun yarn balls!  I gathered up a few sticks and hot glued to the pom pom balls.  Spray painted an old can and tied a scrap fabric ribbon around to look like a vase.

Found the red hook {again} at Joannes and sewed up a little dishtowel and oven mitt for her. Oh, and sewed up the skirt on the bottom, which she can store things in. This part bugs me, but Jeff is telling me to get over it. The skirt part is a bit un-even on the dowel rod. And, I can’t take it off to fix it, since he attached the dowel rod by nails, under the molding frame of the chalkboard.

And, this apron.  I LOVE!  I wish I had made one in my size.  I will admit, I didn’t sew up the whole thing.  My mom and I found a plain white child sized apron at Joanne’s when we were there and I thought it would be much easier to just make the ruffles and finish off the binding.  Also, I added a little fabric flower.  I have made a couple of aprons before and they didn’t turn out so hot, so I thought it would be easier this time around to just use a pre-made base.

And, here she is. Showing off in her new little kitchen!

Thought I would also show how easy it is to re-fashion an old plain shirt into something cute. These two shirts were in my stash and probably bought at Target a long time ago. I often pick them up when they are clearanced out. I have a lot of scrap fabric lying around, so I just added some lace and fabric flowers and wa-lah! Is that how you say it?=))) The other one, I’m not impressed by. It’s supposed to be an owl. Can you tell?=)

If I’m forgetting anything, let me know or if you have any questions, leave me a comment and I can try and answer! I SO appreciate all of the tutorials out there and wanted to share ours!

I must hit post, since I hear a little one up from her nap!

Happy day to you!

xoxo

Lazy week and mason jar love ~ Simple Things Sunday {Monroe, WA photographer}

June 26, 2011 · 10:27 pm

I told Jeff earlier this afternoon that this past week and the week before us happens to be my most FAVORITE of all weeks in the entire year.

Curious as to why?

Well, let me tell you {you will relate to this if you live in the Pacific Northwest}. I love Summer. And, my most favorite holiday is the 4th of July. And, us Seattle-lites all know that Summer really doesn’t begin here until the day AFTER the 4th of July.

I look forward to Summer and warmer days all year long, especially in the Winter months here where sometimes it feels like it rains ALL the time! I do try and look on the bright side and say that at least it keeps our city looking green, BUT… I have said it before, and I will say it again, I am a California girl at heart. Born and raised in San Diego, and I need that Vitamin D.

This week, I have been noticing the firework tents going up! All over town. That delights my soul, because I KNOW the most magical of holidays is right around the corner AND that means the start of Summer! I love the sweet anticipation of it!

SO… with the anticipation of Summer right around the corner and the weather FINALLY beginning to change for the better around here, we had ourselves a nice little week, and to top it off: weekend too. It felt very lazy, yet productive as I finished up a few projects I had going on.

A few of the SIMPLE things that made me smile this past week…

My veggie beds {well, at least one of them, pictured here}.  LOVE seeing my vegetables JUST starting to pop up.

Sugar Snap peas. Summer staple. We just pluck them off the vines and gobble them up. Pure goodness.

And, my little DIY fabric markers I made a few weeks back to mark off my veggies.

Here’s the image I am linking up to for Simple Things Sunday. I was thinkin about it this week, as I tended my garden. Tended. I just used the word, “tended”. I think I was meant to live on a farm {in California}, really, when I use language like that. Ya’ll reckon that would be kindly nice? My chickens, my windmill, and me tendin my garden. Yep, that would be sweet. Alas, I digress… I am still here in my suburban cul-de-sac and loving it. BUT, I was out workin the ground in my veggie beds this past week and the sight of this, made me stop in my tracks. Really. HOW in the world do these little tendrils know how to wrap themselves around the holes in this netting? HOW crazy that they just do! Amazing.

And, these make me smile. Mason jars. L-O-V-E. As I snapped this picture, I realized how many I have around our house.

Here, on our patio. Spray painted these.

Mason jars hanging from our patio table umbrella. Half store bought like this. Half, I twisted wire around the tops to suspend.

I love them lighted with little tea lights in the evenings.

And, more mason jars. Lining our mantle.

Yup, I love me some mason jars.

Surprise visits from friends this past week made me smile. One bringing me some yummy banana bread goodness from a new gluten free bakery in town and my sweet man surprising me one afternoon with my favorite Starbucks coffee.

Little hands excitedly showing me found treasures in our yard.

Neighborhood kids beginning their summer break and hearing laughter in our cul-de-sac. Running out to join them. Starting an impromptu game of hide-n-seek, kick ball, and four-square. Breaking out this week’s favorites: mood sand and side-walk chalk. More goodness.

Scoring 25cent pots at a garage sale, lathering those babies up with chalkboard paint, and making my own little herb garden.

Stickers and snow boots. Nuff said. This little diva has a H-UGE opinion on her wardrobe nowadays.=)

And lastly, finally finishing a little DIY project I have had in my mind to complete since LAST year, after seeing this.

Yeah, I figured the $129 price tag from PB could be beat by 7 bucks at Lowes.
Excited about this. Think it will look cute above my other veggie bed, hanging on the fence.

Hope everyone had a nice week as well and enjoying the anticipation of Summer arriving!

Chillaxin time and a DIY {Snohomish and King County, WA Photographer}

January 11, 2011 · 7:59 pm

We have had a nice couple of weeks of quiet down time, since Christmas… SO enjoyable as a family. I find that I really have to be intentional to give that down time to my children AND to myself and my husband. Jeff and I have talked that it is really easy for life just to “run” us… to guide us where it wants US to go. It will do that, if we don’t set aside time for ourselves. That takes some serious discipline. We get into that rut every once in awhile and I don’t like it. I feel out of touch with God. With my family. With myself. SO… lately, we have been intentional about putting things on the calendar for us. Scheduling some gym time together. And, focusing on what’s important. Just quieting down. And, our church has encouraged each of us to read through the entire bible this year. Quite the goal, I would say, since I have NEVER done that! Always wanted to, just never set aside the time. I am going for it this year!

Anyway, Jeff is back to work and I have been organizing, organizing, and organizing… probably one of my favorite things to do! I have been re-cataloging my pictures in my editing program to make my workflow a bit easier, finishing up some edits of one end of the year session, and working on a better way to organize the accounting part of what I do {HAS to be done!}.

Here are a few snapshots of our past couple of weeks… just playing around the house and working on a few projects.  Chillaxin, as one of Ben’s shirts says.

Just the two shining faces that I get to see every day.

{One of my goals this year is to just take more pictures of our everyday life!  These are the things I will most likely want to remember anyway, down the road, yes?}

Seahawk playoff game day. Our house went a little crazy when Marshawn Lynch ran that 67 yard touchdown! We had some fun that day playing on our bed toghether {our room always has nice light coming through}!

And, as promised, I said I would blog a few DIY’s from time to time… Since, it has been a slow kind of a week, I was able to take a few pics of one of the little projects I completed. VERY simple. If you are a beginner sewer or interested in getting started… this project is for you. Super easy! In fact, I completed it in about 20 min, with Ben hanging around, helping me.

It’s a rice bag soother. Ben has been suffering from growing pains at night, often waking him up in tears of pain. I have heard of these before and thought I would make one for him to help soothe his aches at night.

First, pour some rice in a bag and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil {mine is lavender}.  Let it sit and stew overnight or for a few hours for the rice to smell nice and soothing!

Next, gather your supplies… You really only need some leftover fabric {I had these two pieces laying around from another project I haven’t started yet for Ben}. I prefer fleece or flannel for this project. Much warmer for their little muscles. {I just grabbed a bunch of leftover ribbon from my jar for Ben to pick which one he wanted… i didn’t use all of what is shown}.

Cut two pieces of fabric to the size of your choice {I think I used 10×8 inches}. Lay right sides together and pin a folded up ribbon {folded side inward} in the middle section of  one of your corners {as shown}.

Sew your pieces up, remembering to backstitch at the beginning and the end, leaving a bit of an opening to push the fabric through {right sides out}. I usually sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.  Snip each of your corners just a bit.

Turn your fabric right sides out, pour your scented rice in, and sew up the last part of the opening. There will be a nice little ribbon loop, for little fingers to hold onto now.

Directions for use: Warm in the microwave for about 30 seconds and place on those aching muscles.

This was so easy and quick, I went ahead and made another one for Gmama, when she gets a little older. Ben loves his so much, that he sleeps with it and we have already used it to help his aches. Calmed him right down!

And, two more projects I just finished up… I thought I would show!

Christmas stockings that I had sewed RIGHT before Christmas, just didn’t have names on them yet. I followed this tutorial to help guide me through making these, and added my own little idea of fabric painted names on my trusty burlap {seriously, can’t go wrong with burlap!!!}.  Looking at this pic, they need to be ironed!

And, lastly… I am SUPER excited about this one! A handbag made by me FOR me! This is my first purse that I have sewed AND my first project for me. I usually am sewing for others {which I LOVE, don’t get me wrong, but it was nice to come up with a little somethin somethin for me}. I am thinking I am ready for Spring, looking at the fabrics I chose from my stash. I will now be sporting a BRIGHT bag in the dead of winter! I used this tutorial for my easy peasy bag!

That’s about it for our week… Happy day to you all!

xoxo
