Merry Christmas ~ Simple Things Sunday {Monroe, WA photographer}

December 25, 2011 · 8:35 pm

Merry merry to all of you! Hope your day has been grand and that you have been enjoying a time of rest and peace with the ones you love.

Things that made me smile this week {in no particular order}:

Baking cookies with this little helper.

Family time and cousins playing together.

These two faces. Seriously, I thought Ben might have pooped his pants a little when he FLEW out of his bedroom this morning to find that Santa had been here.

And, this little video I leave you with… Click HERE to view.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE to see other people’s Christmas decorations! SO… I thought I would share ours here at the home front…

I wanted to decorate using rustic, natural elements this year… creating a home with many homemade Christmas items made by myself and the kids. This caused me to not put out as much as usual this usual… to simplify. I liked it. However, I am already looking ahead to next year’s Christmas decorations and I am craving sparkle and some vintage looks, much like this little mantle inspiration. Guess I’ll have to wait till next year!

Yes, that is a FAKE tree. I know, I know. “I thought you said you wanted a rustic looking Christmas this year,” you are asking. I do. BUT, we have tried 2x in year’s past to bring in a real, live Christmas tree and have found out that we are both allergic to it. I have always been bummed about this, as I have always wanted to be the cool family that hikes into the wilderness and chops down their own fir tree with our own two hands. Straight up family Griswold. Not gonna happen, though. Instead, because I crave this ruggedness, I brought home real evergreens outside… you will see in just a sec.

Oh, and the cute Christmas ornament is courtesy of Lisa Leonard. Ordered last year after Christmas discounted.

Brown paper packages tied up with string. These are a few of my favorite things. I went all Martha Stewart this year when it came to the wrapping portion of the season. I am usually just a “throw cheap wrapping paper on the presents” kind of a gal. But, pinterest… oh, sweet pinterest has been oh so inspiring to me, even when it comes to wrapping.

I should have taken a picture with Lightening McQueen and Luigi chillin next to the three wiseman, as this is how we usually find the nativity set.

Our mantle. Homemade stockings, made last year. Tree branches courtesy of a neighbors cut down tree. And, terra cotta pots brought in from outside, displaying sweet little lovelies.

I LOVE our town’s little downtown shops. I was in THIS store a few weeks ago and they were selling these pillows for 40% off. I had in my mind to make a few for the couches, but just haven’t had time, so I couldn’t resist purchasing.

Advent calendar.

Homemade little decorations the kids made. We have been busy crafting at home this past month… you may remember HERE.

Kitchen table and hutch… I have cut some fabric for a table runner, but have yet to find the time to sew it up for the table. Maybe in the next couple of days. You can see our advent candles on the hutch behind the table, we do every Sunday. Have you checked out THIS advent candle display? Maybe for next year. Beautiful.

I made this little Christmas card display earlier this month. I found the inspiration HERE. I have never had a way to display our lovely Christmas cards every year. I’m not sure I like this though. The cards on the wreath all swing every time we close our pantry door. I may have to come up with a different way to display our Christmas cards next year. Do you get as excited as me when you go get your mail everyday this month, excitedly looking for new Christmas cards?

Nativity made from a kit I purchased from HERE. And, the print is by Katie Daisy.

Our porch decs… HOW cool is this!? I found this idea HERE. Simply wrap lights around your tomato wire cages. I added the burlap, because of course, you can’t go wrong with burlap. And, the tree trimmings were picked up at Lowes. I went there to buy some real garland, but found they had a whole box of tree trimmings, so I dug in and came home with these bad boys for FREE. AND, I also scored some short little logs I have stored in the garage to use for several ideas I have in my head down the road. Again, FREE. My neighbor gave me the red bows. So, you see I can be a bit rustic in my Christmas decorations, by displaying them OUTSIDE, so we can be allergy free this year, yes?

Don’t you love it when you can decorate your home without spending a pretty penny. I have found it’s all about using your imagination and finding things around the house to put together and look pretty!

What fun ways do you decorate your house for Christmas?

Christmas countdown… {Monroe, WA photographer}

December 19, 2011 · 3:20 pm

…is on, like Donkey Kong.

What do you have left to do on your list?

Me?

I’ve still got a bit of wrapping of the gifts to do, some sewing up of some pretty little lovelies, and Wednesday will be our baking day.  I’m talkin, bake like we’ve never baked before. Like me sporting an apron and flour on our faces baking.  We are keeping it simple this year however.  Just sugar cookies.  I have not had much luck with sugar cookies, but I picked up the pre-made dough from Costco a month ago, so I am hoping they taste better than previous years!  Wish us luck=)

I thought I’d throw up our 2011 Christmas card we sent out last week!  I wanted to go with a vintage, granny chic vibe this year.  I like the result.  Different, but cute, eh?

Happy Monday to you!

Six things that made this week lovely ~ Simple Things Sunday {Monroe, WA photographer}

December 18, 2011 · 8:02 pm

It was a good week here. A quiet week. Which was much needed. I’m finishing up some projects and wrapping up orders for clients. I feel like I am winding down for the year and I welcome that. Welcome family time spent with my littles and husband. Welcome the peace and beauty that this season brings. Welcome the scented candles lit, the Christmas tunes playing on pandora, and the warm embrace of Jeff’s hooded sweatshirt I usually sport in the evenings. It is all a part of this week’s December loveliness.

Onto the simple things that made me smile this week. There are six I took pictures of and a few small little extra goodies at the end that just put the cherry on top of my week.

1.  A good sunrise.

Bonus points that it fell on my birthday this week.  I awoke Tuesday morning to 36 years of bliss that I have walked so far on this earth.  Thirty six.  Wow.  Crazy that I am that old.  It’s a good thing I can bust out a good running man dance move to remind me that I am still young at heart. As I gathered up my kids and we walked down the hallway to start breakfast, I noticed the unusually bright light pouring through our front window.  We walked outside into the cold morning air and I thanked God for the best birthday gift ever.  Reds, pinks, and oranges lit up our Northwest sky.  Grace especially loved the pink colors and she screamed it loud so that our neighbors could all hear too, “PIIIIIIINNNNKKK!”  Yep, it was the kind of morning sunset that gives you goosepimples, I tell you.  Goosepimples.  It warmed the cockles of my heart. I couldn’t have wrapped up a better present for myself if I had tried.

The rest of my “day” was fairly normal. I do have to share about our Red Robin experience. Yes, we are the family that heads out to Red Robin for EVERY birthday celebration. For two reasons: a.) for the free birthday burger and b.) so you can be sung to.  And, if you know me well, you will know that I do STILL in fact, LOVE to be sung to on my birthday.  Once in college, my roommates took me out to the “Big Bird” and when the waiters came to sing, I stood on top of the table and directed everyone.  Am I ashamed to admit this?  No.  I just LOvE all of the attention I can get on my birthday.  So, you imagine my thrill when Jeff left the table to “use the bathroom” and I KNEW he was going to put the word into the waiters to give it to me good!  Oh, the sweet excitement.  However, while he was gone, our young waitress came back to the table with the bill.  I handed her my Red Robin card {the one that shows you have a free birthday burger} and she says to me, “You don’t want us to sing Happy Birthday to you, do you?”  I knew why she was asking me this.  Because I’m not five.  I’m thirty six, dammit.  Adults shouldn’t WANT to be sung to in public, right?  How could I look her straight in the eye and say, “Why, yes.  Yes, I do.  I do want all of the wait staff to come over, light up a candle, hand me a pink balloon and sing very loudly Happy Birthday to me in the most obnoxious way.”  And, Jeff was gone, so he couldn’t have piped in for me to say, “YES! DO it!”  So I lied, and said, “Oh, that’s alright.”  And then I thought if I should ask her, “You don’t want a tip, do you?” and see what she says.  But, I didn’t.  She responded with a “Oh, good.  I hate singing that song.”

Really?

Jeff got back to the table and I recounted the story to him.  I was bummed.  But, as I was telling him, here they came.  Loudly.  Ice cream in hand and doing their thing.  The thing, that I believe, Red Robin staff does best.  Sing.  Jeff had found our waitress and told her to go for it.  And, I pretended to be embarrassed by all of the commotion, because what thirty six year old in their right mind would want to be sung to like that?  Deep down though, my heart was exploding like red, white, and blue 4th of July fireworks and I was doing cartwheels inside.

2.  Katie Daisy.

Yes, Katie Daisy is the new found love of my life.  I LOVE her art work and I want to collect all of her pieces.  They are whimsical and hopeful, with a burst of color.  Anyway, this little package arrived by Fed Ex this last week and I was beyond excited.  I can only show you the packaging, because what is inside is part of a Christmas present I am working on for Jeff, but isn’t it just lovely?  Even the packaging?  Check her out.  You will love what you see.

3.  Twinkling lights.

They are everywhere.  I love this time of the year when even running to the grocery store is like a magical wonderland.  And, another bonus goes to the pretty December skyline that was showing off the end of the day sunset.

4.  Pig tails.

This week, Grace ran through our house with pig tails in her fine little hair.  Seriously.  I wanted to eat her up, she was so cute.

5. Black patent Mary Janes.

This deserves another… Seriously?  Seriously.  She is so cute.  She strutted around wearing her new Christmas dress with her little hand me down shoes on and she just thought she was the bomb diggity.  Seriously, though.  This too warmed the cockles of my heart this week because before I had her, when I imagined my little girl, I imagined her with pig tails and tiny Mary Janes.  MY little girl.

6. Seeing Santa.

This little four year old dressed up to the nines yesterday to go see the big man.  This was the year.  The year where believing Santa flies in his sleigh and comes down the chimney is real.  Magical.  Magical like running through fields of wildflowers, catching snowflakes with your tongue, or tasting a Hershey’s Kiss for the first time {which Ben did just last week} magical.  I watched closely at Ben’s face as he walked into Santa’s workshop to greet him, list in hand.  His sister followed behind.  I don’t know why this touched me so.  Why I started to choke up as I knelt down next to Ben’s ear and whispered, “Go say hi.”  It could have been the look in Ben’s eyes as he approached Santa’s chair.  The look that read, “I’m nervous and in awe at the same time.”  Or, it could have been the thought again I had pre-kids when I imagined my little boy seeing Santa for the first time.  This was it.  I’m the Mom and this is MY little boy.

Santa read Ben’s list and so tenderly said to Ben, “Ben, come closer so that I can look into your eyes.”  Ben took a step forward.  ”I can tell you’ve been a good little boy this year by looking in your eyes,”  Santa said.  Ben smiled and looked proud.  My heart melted.  We chatted for a bit longer with him, while the camera guy got ready, all the while Grace clinging to my leg.  When it was time, I lifted Ben up to sit on his lap and Grace didn’t want any part of it.  So…  the camera clicked with all four of us in the frame, me holding Grace.  Jeff on one knee.  And, Ben.  Ben was in heaven on Santa’s lap.

A few other “extra” lovelies from the week…

*We saw THIS movie on Friday night. EXCELLENT. Even Jeff liked it.
*Ben coming to snuggle with us in bed in the mornings.
*Zumba.
*We made THESE this week with our pre-school craft group.

I am unable to link up to Simple As That this week, because she is taking a break this week, as they are moving.

Family Rules Subway Art ~ FREE ~ printable {Monroe, WA photographer}

December 14, 2011 · 2:40 pm

Jeff and I have been talking for quite some time about outlining a family “vision” for our family. You know, in the way that large cooperations, church’s, or businesses do so. We wanted to brainstorm something and write it down about what kind of family we want to be, how we want to raise our children and define our marriage, and ultimately, how we want our family to live. We have talked about this for sometime.

Enter in the very popular Subway Art to spark an idea in my head. You have probably seen beautiful pieces or worded art from places like, Red Letter Words or from Etsy. I LOVE the way that some of them has a rustic etched on wood look and I most likely will be ordering a verse on something like that in the future from one of these popular shops! BUT, I wanted to make our own Family Rules Subway Art and so Jeff and I sat down and began brainstorming some of the things we wanted it to say.

Have a looksie right here…
**You’ll have to forgive the bad lighting. This picture was taken at night in our dimly lit dining room area.

Anyway, it has been quite popular around here since we hung it up. We have had conversations with our kids what each of the “rules” are and what they mean. And, some of our recent guests have taken a liking to it as well, sparking some discussion about their own family visions.

You can probably tell that I am passionate about families! I talk about my own family on this blog quite a bit, I LOVE to photograph them and my husband and I love to support other families, specifically, MOMS, in this season of life. SO, I thought of no better way than to say MERRY CHRISTMAS and THANK YOU for such a wonderful year than to offer up our own Family Rules Subway Art to anyone who might be interested!

This is a FREE download. There are two options to download. One is sized to a 16×20 {this is the size we have in our house… fyi: I found the frame at Ikea}. Click HERE to download the 16×20. The other is sized to an 8×10, a perfect fit for a smaller frame. Click HERE to download the 8×10.  Obviously, these are the Family “rules” that we brainstormed for our home, so if you would like something different, I highly recommend checking out one of the online resources I mentioned above for a custom look.  BUT, if you like what I have made, then have at it!  All I ask is that you please do not sell this or claim it as your own, for obvious copyright laws. Also, I would LOVE it if you joined me over at Kelly Harper Photography on FACEBOOK {just click HERE and then click “like” at the top of the page} or by following my blog! You can do so by adding me to your google reader or by subscribing in the side bar to your right.

Consider this my little Christmas present to you and your beautiful families! Thank you for reading and for encouraging me in my own motherhood journey and in my photography as well! It has been an amazing year and I am blessed to have met so many amazing people through this business.

Life lessons from popcorn ~ Simple Things Sunday {Monroe, WA photographer}

December 11, 2011 · 9:43 pm

Early last week, I decided to pop some popcorn for the kids as an afternoon snack.  As soon as the bag goes into the microwave and the sounds of kernels being popped is heard and I can image the delicious smell of it wafts through the air, our yellow lab, rises from his nap and walks on into our kitchen.  He knows that popped popcorn means a special treat for him as well.  That and McDonald’s french fries.  Pavlov dog at its finest.

I poured some of our yummy treat into a bowl and sat down on the couch with the kids to enjoy the crunchy goodness together.  Ben and Grace always get a kick out of throwing popcorn to Chase, while he sits and watches us with drool pouring out of his mouth.  They all just laugh and laugh at Chase catching them in mid air with the snap of his jaws.

This particular afternoon, I noticed how dumb our dog can be.  Not really.  He’s actually really smart.  Several times he has rescued us from being locked out of our house.  But, that is a different story for a different time {we do call him Super dog}.  But, he can be pretty focused on food, which causes him to sometimes miss out on the very treat he loves right in front of his face.  For example, Ben tossed him some pop corn and he excitedly ran to munch it up, while Grace dropped a piece onto the floor.  He trots back over, ready to grab the next toss, as we are all trying to show him that there is already one on the floor for him.  He seems to listen to us, frantically trying to find it, as we are all pointing to it, but he is so excited that he misses it and it sits left on the floor uneaten.  Right next to his paw, while he sits perched and aimed ready for the next launch.  This happens over and over and it is laughable.  The kids and I trying to get him to notice the already thrown ones on the floor.  But, he is just too eager and overly excited for the next throw.  Silly dog.

I wonder how often this happens to me in my own life.  How many times I have missed out on the treat right in front of my face, because I am so eager to get the next treat along the way?  How I miss out on living and enjoying the present and I more so look toward the future.  If I only would have stopped to notice what was right in front of me, I would have been ten fold rewarded by the deliciousness of the blessing.

Such is always my prayer these days.  To stop.  Be present.  To look.  Listen.  Smile at God’s gifts.

I read this earlier this week and it resonated greatly within me:

But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this.

I did not live in the moment enough.

This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night.

I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed.

I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.”

~Anna Quindlen

Isn’t that the truth, mamas?  Shall we stop and look and just BE with our littles more?

I did just that on Tuesday night with a sick little girl who was up every couple of hours with the stomach flu that passed briefly through our house earlier this week.  Yes, I was tuckered out on Wednesday, but early Tuesday morning I held her tight.  I smelled her hair as she snuggled into me all koala style and how it softly touched my face.  I listened to her rhythmic breathing as she fell back asleep.  I rocked and rocked that little babe and rubbed her back and kept her wrapped in her special blanket.  And, I made a point to breathe in the before dawn moments we shared together.

Rockin her messy hair and puke bucket

Besides getting sick for a day this past week, we were actually quite busy being crafty around the house and spending time with lots of friends.  Busy with all things Christmasy and good.  As Ben tells me from the back seat of the car, while passing through our neighborhood, “Merry Christmas, Mommy” and Grace spots the beautiful sparkly neighborhood lights and squeals, “Sparkly shoes!”  {aka. sparkly lights like her silver sparkly shoes}, we had a festive week!  Hope yours was grand as well!

Ben showing us all how to eat the gingerbread house we made.  Notice G’s face…  she was way more interested in eating the candy, instead of decorating.

A little somethin somethin I worked on this week for our Christmas decor. I will try and get up a post soon with some of our fun Christmas decorations around here!

Birdseed ornaments. Recipe can be found here. I came in to do these with Ben’s pre-school class on Wednesday and we tested them at home prior as well. Needless to say, we have birdseed ornaments EVERYWHERE right now, as I am wrapping up all of the class’s ornaments and we are hanging ours around our home.

A little craft we did today.  Except, we used these tiny miniture pots I had in my craft stash, instead of the egg cartons.

And these too. Super easy. Pipe cleaners found in the dollar section at Joanne’s with some extra bells I had from the earlier craft. Jingle bell bracelets.

And, this painted garland the kids painted earlier this week. Hung on the window above our tree.

So, like I said… just some good ol fashioned Merry goodness.

My dear friend said it best last night as we all danced together and watched the “snow” fall at Bellevue’s Snowflake Lane. “This time is so magical for them,” she said. And, I watched as our kids were propped up on shoulders and being held and cradled and they reached up high. High up to the sky to touch those tiny flakes. Laughing and giggling. Dancing and eating their candy canes.

Magical.

On a different note, I’ve got a little surprise for you all that I will post later this week… so stay tuned!

Have a great week…

I met up with this sweet family this past weekend. They were troopers braving the very cold weather {big brother had hand warmers in his jean pockets to keep warm} to get these shots!  I just fell in love with their kid’s dark brown eyes.  Just beautiful!  The fog rolled in thick, just as we were finishing up. I am loving what we captured! Our gorgeous valley used as their background.

**This family will receive a FREE 5×7 with their print order, if they receive 10 comments under this blog post.

More random ~ Simple Things Sunday {on Monday} {Monroe, WA photographer}

December 5, 2011 · 3:28 pm

Our little train maker.

This was actually supposed to be a picture of her older brother HELPING her set up this train track. It was a sweet moment this past week that broke up the monotonous sibling rivalry we seem to deal with now on a daily basis… but, alas I missed it. As quick as it happened and made my heart melt, to the thought that I should grab my camera, the moment passed. Instead, this is what I got. A little girl immersed in trains. Just like her big brother.

And, then that sweet moment passed, when she heard the click of my camera and started yelling, “SEEEEEE! SEEEEEEE!!!” at the top of her lungs, like she does every time I snap a photo. She just has to see herself.

I titled this post ‘More Random’, because that is what I have been feeling lately. Just a bunch of random goodness floating through my brain. So, I will share some of our random week…

*Can I just say how grateful I am for our washing machine? I know I complain a lot about doing laundry. Maybe, I’m not as vocal about it as I think, but in my head, I scream a lot of bad words when I think of doing laundry. It is my never ending task that cannot ever get crossed off my to do list. It is not my favorite thing to enter into our “dungeon” to sort and start the laundry a few times a week, especially in the dead of winter, when my bare feet freeze on our cold garage floor. Do I wish i had a beautiful, bright, sunny, laundry room INSIDE of our house to do this chore? Yes. Would this make me more happy about doing laundry? Maybe. But, last Sunday, when our 13+ year old washing machine called it quits and I was without it all week, I did miss it. I missed the convenience of being able to just start a load whenever I wanted. Whenever we needed. And, the loss of my washing machine made me feel grateful for what we have. And, so grateful to my dear, sweet, handy husband, who worked late in the evenings trying to replace the broken part, only to find out that it was a different broken part, which would cost us a hefty penny to replace. And, thankful to our friends who offered us up a replacement washer and dryer for a GREAT price to replace ours. And, grateful to our other friends who lent us their truck so we could drive down to pick up our new washer and dryer.

Yes, grateful for all of these things today. Even laundry.

*We are in full swing Christmas mode around here. Lots of fun decorating and craftiness lately… I will try and post some pics soon! I was driving home last night and this song came on the radio. LOVE Josh Groban at Christmas time!!!

*We made these sweet little owls last Thursday for our pre-school crafting group project.

*I am trying this recipe for dinner tonight. Jeff usually likes a more hardy meal, but I am hoping the chickpeas will be enough for him!

*We got to get away for the day on Saturday for some fun time in downtown Seattle. My mom came up to watch the kids for us. Such a refreshing break to spend some quiet time with Jeff! We did some Christmas shopping and grabbed some sushi and I got to browse in one of my favorite stores! I used some of my Christmas money to purchase these. In teal. That color makes me so happy!

*While we were out and about enjoying our city on Saturday, we stopped by Starbucks. I am ALWAYS an iced Americano kind of a gal, but since we were in Seattle and I had my wool hat and mittens on, I figured I should get a drink that went with my outfit. So, I had this. It was pure bliss.

That’s about it, folks! Happy Monday to you all!

Happy December 1st!!!

We have been seriously craftastic these past few days. My sewing machine seems to be permanatly attached to our kitchen table, fabric scraps being cut and sewn together to create festive pieces of sweet goodness for the happ happ happiest time of the year, glue gun mounted and plugged into the wall socket on our kitchen counter high above the reach of curious hands, glitter messes found on our family room carpet from said curious helper {future post to follow re. that}. We have been a crazy house of decking the halls. Love this time of the year.

And, amidst all of the decorating, comes Advent.

Ad vent
Noun: 1. The arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.

The waiting. The anticipation. The sweet expectancy of a tiny babe. There is something mysterious about it all, isn’t there? How the God of the universe came rollin into the world as a helpless newborn. Yep. God moved into the neighborhood.

I want my children to know the magic of the Christmas season. Not just the gift giving, or the pretty lights, or the sparkly colors… but the extravagant love made complete in the Christ child. So, we tell the Christmas story and we wait and prepare for his arrival.  I believe most all of the beauty that the Christmas season entails helps us to direct our eyes to this miracle.  If we look for it.

This morning, we began our advent calendar countdown.  I’ve been burning the midnight oil while sewing this bad boy up over the past couple of weeks.  I wanted to be intentional with it, so I wrote up 24 different little activities, crafts, or adventures that we will be doing each day together.  Here is some of what we’ve got planned…

Make paper snowflakes
Make a gingerbread house
Watch the Grinch that stole Christmas
Get a special toy and deliver to the food bank
Dinner out and Snowflake Lane
Make these
And these
And play this game
Sing Christmas carols by the tree
Visit Santa and walk around Garden D’lights
Make cinnamon dough ornaments
Have a Christmas party
Decorate Christmas cards for one another
Make Christmas cookies and deliver to our neighbors

This morning’s activity was to sip hot cocoa straight up with mini marshmallows.

This is her stick a camera in my face, I’ll give you a cheesy smile face. God love her.

What kinds of special things are you doing this month to celebrate the Christmas season? Do tell.
