Off to Never Never Land {Monroe, WA photographer}

October 31, 2011 · 9:32 pm

I tucked my Peter Pan into bed tonight and whispered to him close, “Sweet dreams, my love,” then passed by the hallway into Tinkerbell’s dimly lit nursery, where I held her and kissed her goodnight.  And, my heart melted today as I held her hand and walked with her from house to house and watched him run up ahead with his friends, collecting all of the sugar they could cram into their buckets, as I prayed, “Dear Jesus, please keep them this young forever.”

I’m not crazy about a holiday that often times promotes scary, evil things, but I do love the aspect of imagination.  And, creativity.  And, dreams, while dressing up.

“Why, yes, you can be a Firemen!  Firemen are heroes.”

“And, yes, you can be a princess.  Princesses are beautiful.”

“And, yes, you can be Peter Pan and fly off to Never Never Land with Tinkerbell and fight pirates and rescue mermaids and stay young forever.”

This, I love.

So, off to Never Never Land we flew tonight…  and collected some candy along the way too.=)

We had dropped off some paper bags with letters attached to them to some of our neighbors last week, requesting any canned food or other items they could donate to our local food bank, letting them know we would collect all of the bags on Halloween. Some friends of ours and their daughters came up with the wonderful idea of Trick or Treating for a good cause, so we jumped on board too. We have been having many conversations this week about giving to people in need, who may not have as much as we do. Excited to drop off our donations to the food bank later this week with my kids and continuing our discussions.  Tinkerbell insisted on pulling the wagon this evening.

Hope you all had a fun evening with your little dreamers!

Play dough cookies ~ Simple Things Sunday {Monroe, WA photographer}

October 30, 2011 · 3:10 pm

There are days when she wants to help with EVERYTHING and I don’t always need want her help. I know it will make my duties take a lot longer and there will be more of a mess. But, on these days, I say a silent prayer that I can gracefully include this little one into my life. Into what I do.

In folding the laundry, even though I know the socks will become mis-matched. In pushing the buttons on the microwave, even while I am busy trying to get dinner on the table. In carrying in Chase’s dog dish so that he can be fed, even though there might be some dog food dropped on the floor along the way.

Yes, all of these processes will be slower and much messier in turn, but can I remember that in letting her help ME, that I am the one that is helping HER? Helping build her confidence, her beauty, her interests. And, amongst all of the hurry and mess, isn’t that the most important thing?

So, help on, my sweet one. Help on…

This week helping me in the kitchen resulted in the world’s BEST play dough cookies.  Seriously, people…  they were delish.

One more THOUGHT I’ve been chewing on this week… From the lovely Ann Voskamp, who seems to get me every time with her beautiful words. This resonated within me, not only through the voice of my posts, but in my photography and craft… and in my very life.

Happy week to you all!

Sweet beauty {Snohomish and King County, WA newborn and family photographer}

October 25, 2011 · 9:48 pm

I got to visit this sweet, sweet beauty Saturday morning for her newborn photos. Meet Emily Grace, just two weeks new!

She joins a pretty awesome family, including one very proud and doting big brother, Jack. Mom and I had fun getting Emily to fall into that newborn slumber for these images, all in between a couple of feedings, along with some pee and poo.=)) Joanna and I chatted it up in between newborn soothings and I am feeling like we have been old friends. We talked about our antique treasures {they have THE cutest home with so many handmade and vintage details}, their ministry with Young Life, staying home and raising our kids, and the blessing of having both a boy and a girl. We have so many commonalities in life. Seriously, what a great family. I can’t say enough about how I adore them.

Moore family, you do life so well… God is using you in HUGE ways… in your community and in your own children’s lives. Shine on.

And, enjoy your sneak peek of your little one…

**This family will receive a FREE 5×7 with their print order if they receive 10 comments under this blog posting.

Could Mr. Jack be any more sweet and proud? And, Joanna made this cute little flower for Emily’s headband! Crafty lady.=))

Leaves and light {Snohomish and King County, WA child and family photographer}

October 24, 2011 · 10:32 pm

We were blessed with a BEAUTIFUL Fall evening last week when this family came to visit, some of which came ALL the way from Israel! Can you believe that?! Avishai is part of my First Year portrait package. You may remember him as a newborn here. He is now SIX months! So, it was fun to see him and his big brother and meet his sweet grandparents {visiting from Israel} as well.

You may have heard the back story behind this session {if you follow me on Facebook} last week… As I was taking pictures of big brother, Mom was holding her baby on a log in a grassy field. She moved her arm for something and her wedding band and diamond engagement ring flew off of her finger! I didn’t see it happen, but when I looked over, they were all searching in the grasses. That evening we were only able to find the wedding band, and heartbroken, gave up finding the engagement ring. But, I just knew how completely sad Tamar was, so I decided to go back two days later to search some more. After asking on Facebook if anyone had a metal detector, several people began praying that we find the ring, and not only that, but two of my dear friends, met me and my two kids at the field on a wet morning to begin our search.  I couldn’t believe how many others were rallying to help us find it.  During our hunt, it was feeling a bit hopeless, but about twenty minutes in… we FOUND the ring!!! How AMAZING is that!  Like finding a needle in a haystack.

I think God is so BIG in even these little details. I truly believe He helped us find it!

Can’t wait to reunite the ring with you, Tamar!

And, I hope you enjoy your sneak peek…

Fall is here!!! {Snohomish and King County, WA child and family photographer}

October 23, 2011 · 9:33 pm

Yep, Fall is here and we found some leaves to run around in last weekend, when this family came to visit me for their session. It was fun to see Miss. Annabelle again this year, as I had the privilege of taking their photos last Fall. What a sweet girl she is! So very smart and beautiful, just like her mama. I went to high school with Wendy, what seems like, AGES ago and it is always great to see some old high school friends.

The best part was this family was joined by a new little addition. 10 weeks old. And, so so adorable!

Westby family, it was so great to see you guys and get to take your family portraits!

Sneak attack in the vineyards {Snohomish and King County, WA child and family photographer}

October 18, 2011 · 9:43 pm

Such a FUN family session this was Saturday night. We had originally met a few weeks back, but about 20 minutes into our session, the rains came down on us, so reschedule we did. The kids were SUCH a fun group, so full of energy and laughter and LOVE for their parents. We frolicked in the vineyards, played sneak attack on Mom and Dad, were visited by a peacock {No joke. It must be the vineyard’s mascot or something}, and chased after geese.

The bonus was that the light was gracious to us on our second evening together, trumping the rainout earlier.

Love these images of this super fun family!

Enjoy your sneak peek, W family!

Little birdie ~ Simple Things Sunday {Snohomish and King County, WA photographer}

October 16, 2011 · 2:22 pm

We saved this little guy yesterday. Poor little thing. While working in our yard, Jeff and I came across him tangled up in the strawberry netting. He was in quite a predicament. Jeff grabbed his gloves to cradle him, while we tenderly cut the netting from his body. He hopped off and onto our fence post, where he sat for a good fifteen minutes, while we finished our yard work. We think he was either resting his wings or secretly thanking us. Wherein, he spread his tiny wings and took flight.

In other random news…

I made these last week. Left out the icing, but added a half a bag of chocolate chips. TWO different batches for TWO very special groups of people. You know who you are.

I can’t stop listening to this song. I sing it while I am doing the dishes.

I’m reading this book while I bike at the gym. I was #155 on the library’s reserve, back when I put my name on the hold list earlier this year. Worth it. Tina Fey is my hero. Beautiful AND hilarious.

…And, yes, I read while I work out. It’s called multi-tasking. Don’t hate.

Thinking about starting this project soon. The holidays are around the corner…

Crushing after some rain boots. I like these. I think my taste is too expensive, though. Seriously, how is that I live in Seattle and I don’t have any rain boots?

Happy week to you!

DIY kitchen set {Snohomish County, WA Martha Stewart wannabe}

October 12, 2011 · 3:10 pm

Yep, I will admit, I am a Martha Stewart wannabe. Or rather, maybe I am addicted to pinterest with all of the DIY ideas out there! Seriously, people. There is so much craftiness out there.

I know this is a photography blog. I have vacillated {I can hear Jeff now making fun of me for using the word vacillate. It is one of my favorite words to use and now I just say it a lot just to annoy him} between writing my own personal blog and keeping this one purely professional, but honestly, that isn’t me. I have said before that I can’t separate the two. I strive to live my life transparently and real, and I want this blog to be a reflection of that and my heart for Christ, my family, photography, and my passion for any sort of creativity. These are the things I love the most in my life. They are the things that move my soul. And, quite honestly, in regards to my own creativity, there are times when I tire from just taking pictures. I KNOW in order to stay fresh and continue loving what I do, I have to dabble in other creative things. Those are the times I have to get my sewing machine out. There is something about feeling like I accomplished something when I create. Maybe, that is because now, in this season of my life, sometimes not being able to fully finish anything is a daily reality. Laundry half put away. Dishes still need to be done. House almost picked up. When I am working on a project, I feel restful. Accomplished.

Plus, gift giving is my FAVORITE love language. I am so moved when other people surprise me with a little gift. And, I LOVE giving gifts to others. Earlier this year, I made a quiet goal to try and make homemade gifts for everyone this year. Not to buy from a store. But, rather to use my hands to create something for them. I haven’t been perfect at it… in fact, I am often late at the gift giving part. I just gifted my sister in law and my mom with some homemade flower pins last week and their birthdays were in AUGUST! Sorry guys!

That is not to say that I have tons of time to do these types of things. Working on Grace’s kitchen set kept Jeff and I both up till midnight many nights last week. But, it was worth it and deep down I loved it. I knew we were pouring out our love into this gift for her with our own hands.

SO… I wanted to show you the project Jeff and I made for Grace for her 2nd birthday!

Inspired from other DIY kitchen sets like this and this.

The Before and After…  We started with an old nightstand I scored from Goodwill for $4.99.  AND, on the day I was there, they were having a 40% off sale!

I sanded it down and Jeff chopped off the side things.  I already had paint in the garage, so he painted it and added a polyurethane coat to the top.  We bought an mdf board from Lowes for the back and screwed it to the back.  Jeff then took out the drawer and bought a board to be used for the oven door.

The sides…  On one side, we painted several coats of chalkboard paint and Jeff bordered it with some trim.  For the other side, I found a basket at the dollar store to be used as the fruits and vegetable basket.

I had wanted to use a real faucet, but we couldn’t find one cheap enough, so I got a wooden letter J from Joanne’s and we spray painted it silver.  Jeff used L brackets to hold it in.  The red faucets I found at a local antique store and to lift them up a bit and be able to turn them, we used wooden spools and washers spray painted silver.  The bowl for the sink, I already had laying around the house, so all Jeff had to do was cut a hole in the top to place it in.

The oven burners are wood circles found at Joanne’s, spray painted silver.  The black grates on top are popsicle sticks painted black.  And, the knobs for the burners were also found at Joanne’s.  All purchased with my 40% off coupons.

We just mounted a pre-made shelf to the back of the board.  And, I stuck some old vintage salt and pepper shakers I had lying around on top.  The rolling pin was part of the baking set from Ikea that my parents got her.

I made the flowers using this tutorial.  Really just fun yarn balls!  I gathered up a few sticks and hot glued to the pom pom balls.  Spray painted an old can and tied a scrap fabric ribbon around to look like a vase.

Found the red hook {again} at Joannes and sewed up a little dishtowel and oven mitt for her. Oh, and sewed up the skirt on the bottom, which she can store things in. This part bugs me, but Jeff is telling me to get over it. The skirt part is a bit un-even on the dowel rod. And, I can’t take it off to fix it, since he attached the dowel rod by nails, under the molding frame of the chalkboard.

And, this apron.  I LOVE!  I wish I had made one in my size.  I will admit, I didn’t sew up the whole thing.  My mom and I found a plain white child sized apron at Joanne’s when we were there and I thought it would be much easier to just make the ruffles and finish off the binding.  Also, I added a little fabric flower.  I have made a couple of aprons before and they didn’t turn out so hot, so I thought it would be easier this time around to just use a pre-made base.

And, here she is. Showing off in her new little kitchen!

Thought I would also show how easy it is to re-fashion an old plain shirt into something cute. These two shirts were in my stash and probably bought at Target a long time ago. I often pick them up when they are clearanced out. I have a lot of scrap fabric lying around, so I just added some lace and fabric flowers and wa-lah! Is that how you say it?=))) The other one, I’m not impressed by. It’s supposed to be an owl. Can you tell?=)

If I’m forgetting anything, let me know or if you have any questions, leave me a comment and I can try and answer! I SO appreciate all of the tutorials out there and wanted to share ours!

I must hit post, since I hear a little one up from her nap!

Happy day to you!

xoxo

2 years. Simple Things Sunday {on Monday!}

October 10, 2011 · 2:58 pm

“Looks like it’s a girl,” were the words I heard as I lay on my back with my 20 week jellied up bump exposed in our doctor’s office. I looked up at Jeff and smiled. Smiled for joy at the thought of expecting a girl and finding out for sure for the first time.

But, truth be told. I already knew. In my soul. I knew I was carrying a girl, even before the technician’s voice spelled it out for us. And, I can’t explain why or how. I just knew God would give us a girl.

Just like I knew everything would be fine in the end when they told us she was measuring smaller than “average” and they were concerned about the TWO cord blood vessel attached to my placenta vs. the THREE cord blood vessel I “should” have had. Jeff will tell you that he was shaken when they had us talk to the genetic counselor during my pregnancy. But, for some odd reason, during that time, I felt at peace knowing she would be just fine.

Little, but fine.

And, she was. All 6.4 lbs. of her.

Two years later, I think about the little girl she is turning into and I couldn’t be more proud. Determined, passionate, quicker than quick, moody, compassionate, joyful. It is her giggles that I get to listen to daily that bless my life. It is her beauty that is captivating. I still can’t get over the fact that she is mine.

My little girl.

Happy birthday, sweet Grace!

March on, sister. March on.

**I picked up the vintage gown she is wearing at one of our local antique stores awhile back {The Golden Mean}. I have been dying to get her in it for some pictures! And, shoes are from Gracious May.
