Lazy week and mason jar love ~ Simple Things Sunday {Monroe, WA photographer}
June 26, 2011 10:27 pm
I told Jeff earlier this afternoon that this past week and the week before us happens to be my most FAVORITE of all weeks in the entire year.
Curious as to why?
Well, let me tell you {you will relate to this if you live in the Pacific Northwest}. I love Summer. And, my most favorite holiday is the 4th of July. And, us Seattle-lites all know that Summer really doesn’t begin here until the day AFTER the 4th of July.
I look forward to Summer and warmer days all year long, especially in the Winter months here where sometimes it feels like it rains ALL the time! I do try and look on the bright side and say that at least it keeps our city looking green, BUT… I have said it before, and I will say it again, I am a California girl at heart. Born and raised in San Diego, and I need that Vitamin D.
This week, I have been noticing the firework tents going up! All over town. That delights my soul, because I KNOW the most magical of holidays is right around the corner AND that means the start of Summer! I love the sweet anticipation of it!
SO… with the anticipation of Summer right around the corner and the weather FINALLY beginning to change for the better around here, we had ourselves a nice little week, and to top it off: weekend too. It felt very lazy, yet productive as I finished up a few projects I had going on.
A few of the SIMPLE things that made me smile this past week…
My veggie beds {well, at least one of them, pictured here}. LOVE seeing my vegetables JUST starting to pop up.
Sugar Snap peas. Summer staple. We just pluck them off the vines and gobble them up. Pure goodness.
And, my little DIY fabric markers I made a few weeks back to mark off my veggies.
Here’s the image I am linking up to for Simple Things Sunday. I was thinkin about it this week, as I tended my garden. Tended. I just used the word, “tended”. I think I was meant to live on a farm {in California}, really, when I use language like that. Ya’ll reckon that would be kindly nice? My chickens, my windmill, and me tendin my garden. Yep, that would be sweet. Alas, I digress… I am still here in my suburban cul-de-sac and loving it. BUT, I was out workin the ground in my veggie beds this past week and the sight of this, made me stop in my tracks. Really. HOW in the world do these little tendrils know how to wrap themselves around the holes in this netting? HOW crazy that they just do! Amazing.
And, these make me smile. Mason jars. L-O-V-E. As I snapped this picture, I realized how many I have around our house.
Here, on our patio. Spray painted these.
Mason jars hanging from our patio table umbrella. Half store bought like this. Half, I twisted wire around the tops to suspend.
I love them lighted with little tea lights in the evenings.
And, more mason jars. Lining our mantle.
Yup, I love me some mason jars.
Surprise visits from friends this past week made me smile. One bringing me some yummy banana bread goodness from a new gluten free bakery in town and my sweet man surprising me one afternoon with my favorite Starbucks coffee.
Little hands excitedly showing me found treasures in our yard.
Neighborhood kids beginning their summer break and hearing laughter in our cul-de-sac. Running out to join them. Starting an impromptu game of hide-n-seek, kick ball, and four-square. Breaking out this week’s favorites: mood sand and side-walk chalk. More goodness.
Scoring 25cent pots at a garage sale, lathering those babies up with chalkboard paint, and making my own little herb garden.
Stickers and snow boots. Nuff said. This little diva has a H-UGE opinion on her wardrobe nowadays.=)
And lastly, finally finishing a little DIY project I have had in my mind to complete since LAST year, after seeing this.
Yeah, I figured the $129 price tag from PB could be beat by 7 bucks at Lowes.
Excited about this. Think it will look cute above my other veggie bed, hanging on the fence.
Hope everyone had a nice week as well and enjoying the anticipation of Summer arriving!

This post is a bit late, as I had intended to post yesterday, but weekends can be a bit crazy around here sometimes, especially if you are out of town! Anyway, I am forgiving myself and posting one day late. Think I may try and make this a habit {posting every Sunday… maybe a quick re-cap of our week/one frame and linking up to this blog! I love the idea of noticing and catching the ‘simple things’ that made me smile throughout the week. Keeps me grounded and focused on why I do what I do. If you are up for this challenge, then I welcome you to link up too!
Last week’s art project was to paint a large banner to surprise Jeff with on Father’s Day. The kids had fun finger painting and I win the SMART mom award for going outside to do this, as paint was EVERYWHERE! Bonus: as much as I want to replace our ghetto looking concrete patio with a nice composite deck someday, the plus of photographing on it is the natural reflector that comes from the pavement and the side of our white house. Win win every time!
G-mama had the BEST time with the paint!

Sweet family {Monroe, WA child and family photographer}
June 14, 2011 8:33 pm
I had the privilege of photographing a friend and her beautiful family this past Saturday evening. A few months back, this family walked through a bit of a rough spot: their home had been broken into and many of their belongings, stolen. Amongst many items, the most heartbreaking was the loss of their home computer {filled with ALL of their family photos} AND many of their framed photos!
I felt so badly when I heard this story… I cannot imagine feeling the violation of a home theft and loosing all of my precious memories in photos. Many items can be replaced, but the loss of photos, simply cannot. My heart wanted to do something for them… enter a photo session!
Whitney is one of those moms that you look up to. Home-spun, grounded, and real… I love her solid nature and her creativity in making the world a better place for her children. I love walking beside her in motherhood.
And, her boys are a hoot! I love their wildness and adventure! We had a lot of fun riding the tricycle around, throwing rocks in the river, and looking for bugs in the grasses.
I know these pictures cannot replace your loss, but I hope it’s a start for your family! Enjoy dear friends…

I love this girl. All 18 pounds of her. Her teeny tiny summer tank romper she sports with her stinky blue keens {she insists on wearing everyday}, her sassy self which I know will be the death of me when she is 16, and her silly giggles. What a funny girl she is! She cracks me up daily.
On this particular afternoon last week, Ben was busy hopping around out back, while G-mama and I were getting some things done inside. I hadn’t heard from her for a bit {it seemed just a little too quiet}, so I put my laundry down and walked into our front room to find her looking out the window. Who knows what this little mind was thinking of!? Maybe the cat across the street, the butterfly flittering in our lavender bushes under the window, or the buzzing kids up the street. Point is… it’s the little things that captured her attention.
I could take a lesson from her. To stop and just look. Gaze at the little things more often. It’s the simple things that matter.
I’m doing my first “link up” with this image. Found this blog a few weeks back and love what she is doing here… inspiring us all to stop and remember the simple things. If my 20 month old can do this, so can I.

Junk {Spokane, WA Farm Chicks photographer}

What is a Farm Chick?
A Farm Chick is a girl who sees the world through rose-colored glasses. She loves her family. She laughs a lot.
She’s farmgirl meets Fifth Avenue and with a little style, she’ll change the world.
I had SUCH a fun weekend! I was able to get some “time-off” {thank you most wonderful husband ever for holding down the fort} this weekend and road trip it over to sunny Spokane, WA. What made the trip even more fun, was that I had some pretty rad company: one of my old roomies, Jeanna. J and I go WAY back and I have fond memories of going for midnight runs, hosting mafia parties, and just plain old kickin it “Western” style. I love this girl and am thankful to call her my buddy. AND, I ALWAYS tell this to people… she has the MOST AMAZING farm house ever {which she blogs about HERE}! I do tell her that I envy her beat up old barn out back, which houses all eight of her egg laying hens, her beautiful wrap around porch, and just her perfect country girl style. She was the perfect person to kick it with this weekend at the Farm Chicks Antique Show!
We left Friday morning, of course after making a Starbucks run. Let’s face it, a girl can’t have too much Starbucks. And, we took off in her ride. We joked this afternoon on the phone, how we didn’t even turn on the radio… just jumping back into conversation, like we hadn’t missed a beat, even after all of these years. Yes, we can talk. I am sure the Starbucks helped with that.
We pulled into town later that afternoon, only getting lost a few times, and drove over to the fairgrounds to purchase our tickets. Ready for the next day!
Saturday morning arrived… we pulled our Farm Chicks best attire out and headed over, arriving just after 7:30am. About 50th in line, we were sitting pretty nice, since the doors were set to open at 10am. Adrenaline pumping, ready to get our junk.
The peeps in front of us
The peeps behind us.
We came armed with more Starbucks and a few important reading essentials, ready to pass the wait time. However, we never even broke out our reads, since people watching and chit chatting it up with the women around us was so much more fun. Seriously, there were some CUTE outfits out there… Jeanna and I joked that we felt like Carson Kressley’s red carpet watch, except we only had nice things to say about everyone’s wardrobe. Everyone was just so stinkin cute sportin their cowboy hats, boots, and vintage aprons. And, it was so much fun to meet some amazing women/bloggers as well and share tips about how to get the good junk. We sat next to Beckie, from Vintage Ambiance. She just launched her new site {her shop is out of Bellevue} and it is full of vintage antiques for rent for special events!
Evening Magazine was there, interviewing some of the women for an upcoming show on The Farm Chicks!
We met some bloggin ladies {here, here, and here} who came armed with a load of sidewalk chalk and got the crowd out to draw some art and share their blogs. So sweet.
Serena Thompson, blogger and founder of the Farm Chicks Show, AND writer of this amazing cookbook I own, walked by and J and I had to grab a pic with her. Seriously, we felt a little starstruck. =)
And, then the gates opened… it was like a herd of cows making their way to their dinner, or in this case, a load of shopping frenzy women, headed for their junk. Jeanna was smart, I have to say… When we broke in, she took a left and headed straight back. Naive I, on the other hand, went right, headed to the first booth inside the doors, along with EVERYONE else. My strategy: walk through each row, up and down, so I wouldn’t miss anything. Her strategy and I must say, much more strategic than mine: go left. She told me later that her husband, who is a policeman, always says that people lost or on the run, always naturally go right {case in point, ME}, so her goal was to do the opposite. Way to strategize, Jeanna!
Anyway, we saw SO much sweet sweet junkity junk goodness… ruffles, burlap, scrabble tiles, rusty cans, vintage aprons, old pyrex dishes, galvanized buckets, cute buntings, one of a kind pieces of art work, flower clips, chicken wire, old window frames, chippy painted furniture pieces. The list goes on and on… Seriously, my mind is STILL swimming with all of the inspiration we saw!
Enough of my gabbing… I will let the images speak for themselves…
Yeah, it was a great time… I think the thing that struck me the most and what I mentioned to Jeanna on Saturday was how cool it is to see such amazingly creative women come together with the one purpose of getting the junk. The junk that will be used to re-porpose, create, or decorate with. Reminds me of what most likely, our mothers and grandmothers used to do, and I believe what I have read before, how the Farm Chicks Show originally started. When you don’t have much, you definitely can find a way to make something beautiful out of someone else’s junk. If that isn’t creative, or even “green”, then I don’t know what is! It may sound cheesy, but I am super proud to be a part of that kind of movement, that is becoming more and more popular these days.
SO… what did I get, you ask? Well, I will show you. Can I just say that I got a little giddy when I came across my finds… Rolane, from The Vintage Barn gave me some GREAT deals on her salvaged farm items: A rusty brown wagon, an old picket fence, and my favorite… wait for it… a red, white, and blue windmill! YES, when I pulled that big daddy out of the car, Jeff looked at me with the look that only he could give that said, “Kelly, what IS this?” I can’t explain this purchase, other than the fact that, when I saw it, I knew I had to have it and EVERY TIME I go out back to look at it, it makes me smile. I have big plans for all of my junk… the wagon will be used to plant some flowers in, the fence resides behind one of my raised veggie beds, and the windmill will be sitting in the corner of our yard, complete, after we finish off getting rid of a ton of rock, and landscaping with some bark and shrubs.
I brought me home some other cutie finds, which also have great destinys here at the Harper pad. I will be spray painting the white frame and I’ve got plans for the fabric and doilies, which I should blog about when those projects are completed!
Yup, will definitely be going back next year, probably with a bigger vehicle and a few other of my Farm Chick friends!
